It's back to School time!

Calanna Pharmacy have a variety of products that we personally recommend to see the new school year through, and make it a healthy 2011.  It's this time of year when our children can bring home not only their empty lunch box, or homework but nasty little critters that make their heads itch like crazy - Head Lice.  To combat head lice, we have our own naturally formulated head lice products, which come in one handy and affordable pack including a FREE lice removal comb, which are made locally to treat each step of the head lice removal process.  If you would like more information on head lice, be sure to read the online newsletter located on our website - set to come out in February!

Don't forget we have our FREE 'Back to School' checklist which lists a number of handy tips for parents - things to have on hand at home for the school year.

Every child wants something NEW for school, so we suggest you don't over look our funky stainless steel water bottles.  These bottles come in all sorts of wonderful colours and patterns, and are a great gift for the whole family - they will last for years!

Amazing images of the devastating Queensland floods - thanks to the ABC

http://www.abc.net.au/news/infographics/qld-floods/beforeafter.htm
(there is a black line which can be moved from right to left - to show the after effects of the flooding)

When looking at these images, it's hard not to imagine the heartache of the families, who have lost so much.  What brings such light to our minds is the COMMUNITY spirit, well done.  We are in awe of your amazing spirit and compassion for your neighbors, friends, and families.

Our thoughts are also with those families in regional Victoria who are also going through the same devastation.

Calanna Pharmacy is putting on a Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser in Townsville to help raise funds for the 'Premier's Flood Appeal'.  Please come along if you can.

Where:   Calanna Pharmacy Kirwan - 36 Thuringowa Drive
When:    Saturday 22nd January, 2011
Time:      8am - 11am

*All funds raised go directly to the Flood Appeal*

Health Benefits of Pilates

Pilates is a non-aerobic method of exercising that lengthens & strengthens all the major muscle groups in the body.  Pilates requires concentration in finding a centre point to control body through movement.  Each exercise has a prescribed placement rhythm and breathing pattern.  There are different levels in pilates, and as you progress the more benefits you accomplish.

When you exercise the art of Pilates, you will discover that muscles are never worked to exhaustion, so there is no stress on joints just intense concentration.  Generally, you go through a series of exercise sequences that are performed in low repetitions, usually 5 - 10 times over a session of an hour or an hour and a half.

Pilates is taught on an individual basis, and this will suit everybody from elite athletes, to people with limited mobility, pregnant women and people with low fitness levels.  Now lets look at some of the benefits;
- Improved muscle strength and tone
- Increased flexibility and strength of the abdominals and back (core strength)
- Increased posture and rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle imbalances
- Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
- Improved concentration
- Increased body awareness
- Stress management and relaxation

So give it a go, you'll find a Pilates Studio near you.

Rain has seen us into a New Year!

Welcome to 2011 members, customers and fellow blog writers.  We up here in Far North Queensland, Australia have been swimming our way into this new year.  Although we encourage the rain, it's hard to watch our Southern Queensland friends and family deal with the flooding.  We are thinking of you, and hope our thoughts & prayers reach you and help you re-build.

Summer creatures are out and about, last month we gave some tips on how to keep mozzies at bay, so now lets look at another indoor/outdoor creature - The White Tailed Spider.  Their favorite time of year is now, Summer, and they lurk around bedding, clothes/towels left lying of the floor, underneath tree bark, lying under mulch and in any nooks & crannies.
What do White Tailed Spiders look like? Cylindrical body line, 1 - 2cm in length, have glossy legs, are dirty grey to brown in colour and have a white or light grey spot on their 'tail'.  They may also have two white/grey spots at the front of the body too (but not all of them).
How do we know when we have been bitten by a White Tailed Spider? You will know if you have been bitten when you notice one or more of the following symptoms;

  • Localised irritation, such as stinging or burning sensations
  • A small lump
  • Localised itchiness and swelling
  • Discolouration of the skin
  • Ulceration of the bite (in some cases)
  • Nausea and/or vomiting (in some cases)

How can we administer First Aid? First aid suggestions are to place an ice-pack on the bite to reduce any swelling, and see a doctor if the bite becomes blistered or ulcerated, and if you can try to keep the spider (in a plastic or glass jar) for identification (not always possible).  White Tailed Spider bites mostly occur on arms and legs, however bites can occur on any part of the body.

HAPPY NEW YEAR MEMBERS

May I suggest you spend a little time on the following questions from John Izzo’s book: “The Five Secrets you must discover before you die.”?

1. Be true to yourself

“The greatest tragedy in life is to spend it on fishing only to discover that it was not fish you were after” – Henry David Thoreau
1. Is my life focused on the things that really matter to me?
2. Am I being the person I want to be in the world?

2. Leave no regrets
“The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone” – Harriet Beecher Stowe

3. Become Love
“If you want to be happy practice compassion. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion” – The Dalai Lama

4. Live the moment
“Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile is the source of your joy” – Thich Nhat Hanh
• What am I grateful for today?
• Did I live in the present today or did I let tomorrow or yesterday steal the day’s happiness?

5. Give more than you take
“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individual concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity” – Martin L King Jr

Our community is hurting, it needs healing, it needs all of us to think and act with our heart, we need to find win-win solutions and this has to begin with LOVE for each other…….Mario
