Cyclones, Flooding, Devastation

Well Far North Queensland has had it's first Cyclone of the season, with another looming off the coast - it's still a fair way out from the coast.  Have you got your cyclone kits ready, with a plan for the family in-case of evacuation?  It might be an idea to get a plan, and some equipment ready, just in case the next one is a big one.  A First-Aid kit is a must, and we can certainly help you there!

We hope that our Southern Queenslander's will be alright.  Many people have been evacuated out of their homes, due to the flooding - our thoughts are with you.

For many of us up North, we understand and are ready for the wet season, but for those in southern areas and states who are experiencing wild weather, are not.  They are used to sunny days, with longer daylight, thanks to day light saving, however this Christmas hasn't bought much joy to many Australians.  Clean ups are always hard emotionally & mentally.  We hope you get your homes back soon, so that you can continue with life, as you would normally.

Let's hope the New Year brings some joy, no more rain, and plenty of sunshine :-) www.calannapharmacy.com.au

A Mozzie filled Christmas - NO thanks! Tips for a mozzie free festive season...

Wow 2 more sleeps till the excitement of Christmas comes alive!  We are wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and an absolute bright adventure full New Year!

At this time of year, especially in Tropical North Queensland we get invaded by little buzzing insects called Mosquitoes.  I'm sure most of us know that Mosquitoes can carry disease that may be passed on to people through mozzie bites.  The diseases are carried and transfered through the blood, and we also know that mozzies love sweet blood.  So then how can we control these little buzzing creatures, and keep them at bay around our homes?  Well lets look into it!  Avoid outdoor activities when mozzies are prevalent i.e. Dusk , wear long loose fitting light coloured clothing, use effective repellents (coming soon to Calanna repellent for pets), use 'knockdown' sprays and plug-in vaporising devices indoors and use mosquito coils outdoors, regularly check for any holes in fly-wire and mend them, prevent pools of water from forming i.e. get rid of unused tyres, tins, rubbish, make sure ponds are full of fish etc., change pets' drinking water regularly, change pot plants and bird baths at least once a week - a great tip for plants; put sand around the base!

In Australia, some of the diseases caused by mosquitoes include; Murray Valley Encephalitis virus, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and Dengue fever.  These disease can make people ill and could become even more severe.  So we stress upon being vigilant around your homes, Shu away those mozzies for a peaceful and enjoyable Festive Season!

Merry Christmas and have a wonderful New Year!

“All of us need each of us and each of us need all of us.”

Welcome to December – yes the last month in 2010
Much has happened to each of you personally and as part of Australian society during this year. For what ever has happened it is good to look back over the year and realise what has been achieved, what challenges have been faced, how have we faced them and who we have become in the process.

•Can we say we are personally better as a result?
•Have we increased our self confidence and our skills?
•Have we increased our knowledge of the areas that we enjoy and those that are important?
•Can we look ourselves in the mirror and be happy we who we see and who we are?
•How have we stacked up with our values and beliefs?
•Have we blamed or have we loved?
•Have we built bridges of hope and support or a road of regret?

Jim Rohn has written: The prophet said, "There are many virtues and values, but here's the greatest: one person caring for another." There is no greater value than love. Better to live in a tent on the beach with someone you love than to live in a mansion by yourself. One person caring for another, that's one of life's greatest expressions.”

In this era of apparent selfishness and manipulation and huge financial and social challenges, it really is important to remind ourselves that:

“All of us need each of us and each of us need all of us.”

The more we act with patience, respect, loyalty, benevolence and empathy, the more of these characters of love we will attract – what a great feeling that is!!!

From the Calanna Teams and myself …a Happy and Holy Christmas…..Mario

7 Tips for the Festive Season - written by Vanessa Laird

Yes it’s that time of year again when our lives are full of excitement and planning. Our hectic schedule is filled with shopping, functions and overindulgence. Our pockets suddenly become empty, our waist line starts to expand and our social commitments are constant.

Generally at the end of this chaotic time we are so burnt out and exhausted that for many of us it takes a long time to recover. Returning to routine can be difficult and we may be left with digestive upsets, irritability and a feeling of complete sluggishness.

The abundance of food and alcohol during the festivities can cause multiple digestive complaints such as; bloating, indigestion, reflux, belching, abdominal distension, constipation and flatulence. We may even experience lower bowel cramping, nausea and diarrhoea. There are many helpful strategies to help us stay healthy during the ‘silly season’ that can prevent depletion of our energy and keep our digestive systems functioning optimally.

7 Helpful Tips to Stay Healthy During the Festive Season:
1. Don’t stress over buying gifts. Spend your money sensibly and avoid spending above your means.
2. Drink plenty of water. This can help prevent you from over-eating and prevents constipation.
3. Add mineral water to wine to dilute the potency &/or ensure you have 1 glass of water to every alcoholic beverage.
4. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and crisp green salads with a serve of ham, seafood or vegetable protein.
5. Keep active such as swimming, a game of cricket or brisk walk daily for half an hour.
6. Digestive enzymes can help alleviate symptoms such as bloating, indigestion and flatulence. They also provide better absorption of nutrients.
7. Take a Multivitamin supplement, especially one high in B vitamins.

Stay safe and healthy during the holidays, Merry Christmas! http://www.calannapharmacy.com.au/

THE COUNT DOWN IS ON!

As we know, it's the 1st day of December, and it's when the 'Christmas Ideal' truly begins.  All the children are counting down the days until they can zoom underneath the Christmas Tree to find what Santa has left there!  For most of us, this is a special moment when we see our children's faces light up and sparkle just like the Christmas lights.  For others, this moment isn't so special...
We would like to take this opportunity to remind all, that not all Christmas' have a happy ending, so please give to a charity or foundation (if you can) who make this day special to those who cannot afford or will not usually share a moment of love.
At Calanna, we have among us some special volunteers who help out homeless children & adults through Rosies and/or Harold's House and many other charities and foundations - we congratulate these dedicated people, and we thank them for their pureness of heart.

So, lets hope that everyone can share a sparkling 25th December.

WE WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!
