OCTOBER 2012 - Understanding Stress & How to Manage it

It’s important to note that Stress is NOT Depression.  Stress is a response to an event or situation.  Stress is common in daily life and may be associated with work, family or personal relationships and it may seem that there’s nothing you can do about it, at the time.

But, you have more control than you might give yourself credit for.  The simple realisation that you’re in control of your life, is the foundation of Stress Management

“Managing Stress is all about taking charge: of your thoughts, emotions, schedule and the way you deal with problems.”

Identify the sources of stress in your life is the best way to begin your stress management plan.  Although, this isn’t as easy as it sounds.  It’s not always obvious to find the true sources of your stress, as it’s easy to overlook your own thoughts, feelings and emotions.  To identify your true sources of stress, look closely at your habits, attitude and excuses.
Your stress levels may remain the same or get more out of your control until you accept responsibility for the role you play in creating your stress…

One way to help you identify your true sources of stress is using a ‘stress journal.’ Each time you feel stressed, write down;
  1. What caused the stress
  2. How you felt, both physically and emotionally
  3. How you acted in response
  4. What you did (or could do next time) to make yourself feel better

Look at how you currently cope with stress
Let us take a moment, and think about how we currently manage and cope with the stress in our lives.
Unfortunately, many people cope with stress in ways that compound the problem;
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Sleeping too much
  • Drug abuse
  • Overeating or under-eating
  • Procrastination
  • Taking out stress on others

Learning healthier ways to manage & cope with stress
Let’s take a look at the four A’s: Avoid, Alter, Adapt or Accept - all of these have one common denominator: they require ‘Change’.  You can either change your  situation or change your reaction.

Stress Management Strategy #1 - Avoid unnecessary stress
Not all stress can be avoided, but you may be surprised however, by the number of stressors in your life that you can eliminate.
  • Learn how to say ‘NO’ - know your limits & stick to them
  • Avoid people who stress you out - limit the amount of time you spend with someone to consistently causes you stress. Take control of your environment
  • Avoid hot-button topics of conversation - i.e. politics or religion if these make you uncomfortable or stressed

Stress Management Strategy #2: Alter the Situation - if you can’t avoid a    stressful situation, try to alter it;
  • Express your feeling instead of bottling it up
  • Be willing to compromise
  • Be more assertive
  • Manage your time better

Stress Management Strategy #3: Adapt to the Stressor - If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself!
  • Reframe problems - try to view stressful situations from a more positive point of view. ü Focus on the Positive
  • Look at the big picture ü Adjust your standards

Stress Management Strategy #4: Accept the things you can’t change
  • Don’t try to control the uncontrollable
  • Look for the upside
  • Share your feelings
  • Learn to forgive

OCTOBER 2012 - Practitioner's Advice on Vitamin B

B vitamins, a basic essential vitamin which is processed out of much of our foods is a very necessary nutritional aspect for mind health.  Other habits decrease this important vitamin in our intestines such as consuming alcohol, eating a boxed cereal for breakfast and wheaten flour breads for lunch. It’s no wonder depression has become a national issue. I have to ask, is it an illness, or is it a nutritional deficiency?

B Vitamins are critical for so many bodily organ functions. However, I am talking today about depression so will concentrate on this area in which B vitamins play a major role.  If you eat a high fat, processed and/or takeaway food diet, B vitamin supplements are not supplemental, they are essential to satisfy basic nutritional need.

Food sources of B Vitamins are whole grains, eggs, red meat, liver, poultry, fish, dairy including cheese and pure butter, seafood, nuts, seeds, royal jelly, brewers yeast, broccoli, kale, beetroot, corn plus bifido bacteria supplement to ensure the gut produces these vitamins from the foods. The cholesterol management effect of vitamin B5 will allow you to eat steak, eggs, and butter without detriment to cholesterol levels providing processed carbohydrates are not eaten.  Processed carbs come as boxed cereals, breads, biscuits, pasta and white rice.  We have been advised against eating eggs, red meat, nuts and natural full fat foods for many years now. When we freely ate eggs, red meats, butter and full cream milks we did not suffer the same mental and behavioural problems we are encountering today.

Of course there are other influences that contribute to depression. However, the lack of B vitamins in our diet is a major factor which may be supplemented by taking a daily B vitamin complex, plus an individual B vitamin according to need, and improving our food choices.

Please ask for the information sheets on Depression and Anxiety which will include B vitamins in detail at Calanna’s Natural Medicine Clinics, Townsville, North Cairns and Woree.

OCTOBER 2012 - Words of Wisdom by Mario

Hello Club Members & welcome to October,

We have just finished the Finals of the 35th Calanna Junior Speaking Contest in which 214 amazing young people delivered 3 minute speeches to an audience of family, friends and teachers.

One topic I decided to comment on is the speech about “The Four Bodies” – Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

You see when it came to doing a project – Everybody could have tried it. Somebody could have done it. Anybody could have helped. But Nobody did.

There are many people involved in many events, competitions, sport, music etc and others who say “I do not have any time”. The old saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person” – is still applicable even in the 21st Century. Our natural tendency is to blame someone, or make an excuse – rather that just accepting the challenge and doing something – anything is better than doing nothing.

I am reminded of a story I read: “When I was a kid, one of my father’s favourite riddles to us went like this: Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left? The first time he asked me, I answered, “One.” - “No,” he responded, “Five. Why? Because there’s a difference between deciding and doing!” Procrastination and Apathy are personal and community killers.

So when a challenge or an opportunity comes your way – decide to be the Somebody that gets Everybody to believe that  Anybody can help you and that Nobody is able to be nothing. Let October be the Month of Action……….Mario
