WHAT IS ASTHMA, AND HOW CAN WE MANAGE IT?

Asthma is usually caused by an allergic reaction in the lungs which leads to inflammation of the lining of the airways. This inflammation causes swelling & gasping of breath. Approximately 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in Australia suffer from Asthma or asthma related symptoms.

What symptoms are associated with Asthma?
The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, a persistent cough at night or after exercise. Sometimes asthma can be triggered by illness, allergens and/or exercise.

What can trigger Asthma?
· Cold & Flu or a chest infection
· Pollens, grasses and mould
· Cigarette smoke, smoking or smoke in general
· Animal hair and dander (skin flakes)
· Dust mites
· Some chemicals, particularly those with strong smells
· Some drugs; aspirin, anti-inflammatories and some blood pressure medicines
These symptoms are not exhaustive and are not always related to asthma so it is important to seek medical advice.

Tips for avoiding triggers
· Dust Mites - exposure to dust and dust mites can be difficult to exclude completely. But you can reduce exposure to dust mites by washing bedclothes in hot water, removing sheepskin and woolen underlays and airing pillow & quilts in direct sunlight each week.
· Mould - again similar to dust mites - keep surfaces clean & free from moisture build up, seal leaks in wet areas & regularly place indoor plants outside for sunlight

Helpful tips for proper Asthma Inhaler Technique
Good inhaler technique will lead to better asthma management and control. Some important steps for people using asthma metered dose inhalers like those shown below;
1. Remove cap
2. Hold inhaler upright and shake well
3. Breathe out gently
4. Put mouthpiece between teeth without biting and close lips to form a good seal
5. Start to breathe in slowly through mouth and press down firmly on canister
6. Continue to breathe in slowly and deeply
7. Hold breath for about 10 seconds or as long as comfortable
8. While holding breath, remove inhaler from mouth
9. Breathe out gently away from mouthpiece
10. If an extra does is needed, wait 1 minute and then repeat steps 2-9
11. Replace cap

AUGUST 2014 - What can our EYES tell us.....?

IRIDOLOGY

What is Iridology?
Firstly let’s take a look at what Iridology is not? Iridology is not a predictive tool
Iridology cannot predict whether a person will get cancer or how and when they will die, it can however, offer an indication of the condition of tissue and organ health which in turn determines a person’s quality of life and how well the body is working.

To an Iridologist, specific areas of the iris correspond to specific organs, tissues and body areas, while colour and texture give an indication of biochemical changes in the body.  Specific changes in the appearance colour and even texture of the iris assist the iridologist in the detection of particular areas within the body that are inflamed, overactive, degenerating or underactive.  Iridology does not diagnose or name disease, but it can identify weak or overactive areas in addition to detecting poor waste removal.  An Iridology consultation with your Naturopath can pinpoint areas of dysfunction within the body that may require additional support or further treatment.

So.., the tool of Iridology is very useful when used in partnership with a comprehensive health consultation by your Naturopath as it is able to confirm the cause and effect of disease.  I recommend giving it a go, try to determine the how’s and why’s of your existing medical conditions and symptoms.  Knowing your body is the first and most important step toward optimum good health and well-being.

AUGUST 2014 - Words of Wisdom

Hello Club Members & Blog readers,

Busyness seems to be “the word” these days. I wish I had more time? The older you get the faster time flies! I wish there was another hour in the day!

So how can you improve your day – and maximise your achievements?

At the end of each day:

1.         Journal - write down what you have done, who you met, what you have achieved.  What you learnt or what you shared.

2.         Mediate/pray/relax the mind – “Look within and around you” and acknowledge your value.  As we look around for Heroes – let us not forget that we are each born for a purpose. We are born with certain gifts and we can improve them and build on them to become better or we can ignore them and become resentful and angry. Let us be aware of the Hero inside ourselves.

3.         Exercise, rest, sleep and enjoy good food and water.

4.         Write down three things you are grateful for. We neglect our Spiritual dimension at our peril. This is our connection to others, the way we behave and how true we are to our purpose in life. This reflection helps to build our Character and determine our Attitude.

5.         Do a good deed for someone – “the best way to cheer yourself up - is to try to cheer up someone else”

6.         Plan tomorrow – choose no more than 4 things to achieve and follow the above steps. This step is to determine what really matters to you.

Our success, our achievements, our productivity, our influence and our connection with others – is the sum total of what we do, think and say each day. What we read, what we watch, what language we use, who we associate with, where we go, why we choose the food we eat and fluids we drink – are all responsible for WHO we become – day by day.

www.cahracterworks.com.au

We build our Character and our attitude by choice. We choose to be angry or calm, joyful or miserable, determined or lazy, to act or procrastinate, to be compassionate or selfish, to listen and understand or ignore the feelings and plight of others.
